 Physical Education Sessions

Problem Based Learning: A Tactical Games Approach for Team Handball

Move into a dynamic approach to teaching skill and game concepts that will lead to successful game play. Learn to create tactical problems to get students to think and understand how to react and move during dynamic game play.  Participate in a variety of lead-up games that will reinforce the tactics of team handball and skills necessary to play.  The drills and activities that you learn can transfer over to any team or invasion game.

Big Three in PE: Integrating Health and Skill-Related Fitness

Examine your current methods of developing health and skill-related fitness. Experience creative ways to make fitness and skill development fun and engaging for all students.  Engage in a variety of Flag Rugby skill-related fitness activities that will support the development of health-related fitness. Each of the activities are fundamental to the Functional Movement Training (FMT) Method and can be used or modified for different sports/activities.

ADAPT- Alternative Dynamic Activity Preparation Training: Racquet Sports

Move from the traditional static or dynamic warm-up to an effective activity preparation utilizing the movement patterns used in racquet sports. Engage in an ADAPT that has been developed for badminton and utilized with middle and high school students. Use the elements of ADAPT to develop a warm-up specific to each of your instructional units.

Spatial Awareness: Where Do I Go? and How Do I Move?

Come learn effective methods to teaching early elementary students about boundaries, relationships, pathways and locomotor movements. Explore creative ways to use a variety of equipment while supporting an age and developmentally appropriate learning environment.  While participating in different activities, you will learn how to embed assessment into each.

Dodge, Flee and Chase

These three skills represent the foundation from which students learn how to move within space. Engage in a variety of activities that will support your students' understanding of skill, movement and activity concepts. Through developing an understanding of the elements of movement: space, effort and relationships, students will be better prepared to engage in a variety of invasion games.  Differentiated activities will support the engagement of a diverse student population.

Dynamic Warm-up- Preparing Your Athlete for Performance and Developing Movement Skill

Develop the knowledge and skills required to design an effective activity preparation which utilizes movement patterns essential to skillful participation in various sports. Prepare your athletes by facilitating the essential physiological changes that are fundamental to a "warm-up" and serve as a foundation for movement skill acquisition. Learn more about the current research behind movement and performance in youth sports.

Coaches as Teachers- Providing a Safe and Effective Training Environment for Your Athletes

Working with young athletes is more than knowing the game. Create a positive training environment by expanding your knowledge and understanding of the physiological and psychological needs and differences of young athletes (nutrition, conditioning and motivation).

Sport Performance- Increasing Performance Through the Development of Movement Efficiency in Young Athletes

Learn how to enhance the performance of your young athletes by increasing their movement skill. Movement efficiency is the foundation of sport performance and is essential in creating dynamic strength, "Strengthen the movement, not the muscle."

Guiding Principles of Professional Development

One of the most important elements to developing and sustaining a high quality standards-based physical education program is on-going sustainable professional development. Time and again, physical educators are often engaged in professional development that does not address the instructional methods, strategies or content knowledge that is necessary to impact student achievement within physical education. In order to address the systemic change that is necessary to continue the advancement of physical education, it is essential that physical educators are engaged in high quality and sustainable professional development.

Professional development is a process not a product. In order for professional development to be effective, it must be more than a single event… the process must be developed upon five guiding principles. These principles are:

1. Investigation—teachers are provided with in-depth content knowledge that is based upon scientific research and best practices.

2. Reflection—teachers are guided to develop questions that lead to a reflection of their professional content knowledge and instructional practices.

3. Application—teachers are provided with the on-going support and resources to implement the new content knowledge and/or instructional strategies.

4. Collaboration—teachers are provided with the opportunity to work with other professionals to capture and share the learning and move towards a collective vision.

5. Evaluation/Assessment—teachers are engaged in an evaluation process of their content knowledge and implementation of instructional strategies as it relates to the content of the professional development.

Physical education is a distinct discipline with standards and in-depth content knowledge that are essential to the future health and physical well-being of today’s youth.

Standards Based Instruction

You have to know it to teach it!—Examine the units of instruction that you are currently teaching and identify areas of content knowledge that are necessary to take lessons from average to awesome. The development of teacher content knowledge is the key to enhancing the learning environment for all students. Experience the impact of scaffolding, differentiation and spiraling as your content knowledge increases. Empower yourself professionally by developing a deeper understanding of: Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics and Motor Learning.

Guiding the Instruction—Examine the State or National Standards and identify how to use them as a guide in the continued development of your grade specific curriculum. Aligning your curriculum with the standards provides you with the opportunity to develop a comprehensive program that addresses physical literacy (the skills, knowledge, attitudes and confidence necessary for students to live a physically active and healthy lifestyle).

Assessing and Grading Student Learning—How do you know they got it? Learn how to develop assessments that will accurately reveal student learning and provide the opportunity to reflect upon the effectiveness of your teaching. Learn a variety of assessment strategies to check for student understanding (formative assessment) and determine whether mastery of the content has been achieved (summative assessment). Does your current grading policy accurately reflect student learning? Learn to develop an effective grading policy that reveals student achievement in relation to the standards-based curriculum.

Functional Movement Training

The Functional Movement Training MethodMoving from Isolation to Integration—Learn the importance of integrating skill and health related fitness through an age and developmentally appropriate manner—The Functional Movement Training Method. Through the integrating the FMT Method into your existing curriculum, you will learn how to use linear and non-linear progressions to develop the skill and health related fitness of your diverse student population.

TrinityThree Essential Movements—Discover how the lunge, squat and scapular retraction provide the foundation for most all movements that we perform. Learn how to develop linear progressions to create proper biomechanics within these three essential movements that all other movements will build upon.

ADAPTAlternative Dynamic Activity Preparation Training—Develop the knowledge and skills required to design an effective “warm-up” which utilizes movement patterns essential to skillful participation in various units of instruction. ADAPT prepares the body by introducing the necessary physiological changes that are fundamental to activity preparation and serves as a foundation for movement skill acquisition (fundamental and specialized).

Functional CircuitsIntegrated Learning—Create activity circuits that address the components of skill and health related fitness to strengthen movement skills (fundamental and specialized) necessary for successful participation in various units of instruction.

Literacy in Physical Education

Physical Education vs. Physical Activity—Defining the importance and role of each—Physical education supports the development of skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for a healthy and physically active future; whereas, physical activity serves as a means to meet the needs of the present. Examine the importance of the “education” and “activity” in the educational experience of students and how schools can provide a high quality standards-based physical education program and opportunities for regular engagement in physical activity.

Technology

Implementation & Support—Move beyond personal use and successfully implement your technology within your physical education program. Learn how to apply a variety of technological resources specific to physical education to support student learning and achievement of State and National Physical Education Standards.

1. Heart Rate Monitors
2. Pedometers

Coaching and Athletics

Athletic Performance Enhancement—Learn how to prepare your athletes for competition and increase their performance through strengthening the movements that are specific to your sport. By integrating functional strength training, dynamic flexibility and specific sport biomechanics, you can enhance the ability and performance of your athletes while reducing their chance of injury. Strengthen the movement, not the muscle.
